POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for overseeing all finance, accounting, and reporting activities. The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations of the budget, accounting, payroll, and distribution of grants, and assist with human resources. The controller will ensure that the financial systems and procedures are in place to support effective program implementation and conduct clean audits.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
FINANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Manage cash flow, forecasting and ensuring availability of funds as needed
• Oversee all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
• Oversee financing strategies and activities, as well as banking relationships
• Prepare monthly and annual financial reporting materials for the Foundation’s board of directors and finance committee.
• Direct the annual budgeting and planning process, administer and review all financial plans, and compare actual results to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate
• Develop and maintain financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
• Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines
• Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, program budgets, and actual expenditures.
• Oversee all financial, program, and grant accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
• Manage the audit process and liaise with external personnel.
BUDGETING AND FORECASTING:
• Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with department heads and the executive team.
• Monitor budget performance and provide variance analysis to inform decision-making.
ACCOUNTING AND ADMINISTRATION:
• Oversee to ensure proper maintenance of all accounting systems and functions.
• Ensure organizational accounting policies and practices are implemented and updated by working closely with the President/CEO.
• Supervise the accounting team to ensure accurate and timely processing of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger activities.
• Ensure proper internal controls are in place to safeguard the organization’s assets.
• Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures.
• Ensure timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial reporting for federal and state funders, foundations, and the Foundation’s board of directors; oversee the preparation and communication of monthly financial statements.
• Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.
AUDIT AND COMPLIANCE:
• Coordinate the annual audit process, coordinate with external auditors and ensuring timely completion of audits.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and grant requirements.
GRANT MANAGEMENT:
• Oversee financial reporting for grants and ensure compliance with grantor requirements.
• Assist in the preparation of grant proposals and budgets.
OPERATIONAL AND FINANCIAL STRATEGY:
• Partner with the president on all operational and strategic issues as they arise; provide strategic recommendations to the president based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis.
• Mentor and develop finance staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
• Promote a culture of transparency and accountability within the finance team.
• Oversee long-term budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with the Foundation’s strategic plan
• Coordinate the development and monitoring of budgets.
• Participate in corporate policy development
• Engage with the finance committee of the board to develop financial plans and projections
• Remain up to date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.
• Assists with processing of terminations.
• Prepares weekly, monthly, quarterly, and year-end reports (gross payroll, hours worked, vacation accrual, tax deductions, benefit deductions, etc.) for management.
• Performs various journal entries and account reconciliations and provides General Ledger support.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or equivalent certification preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
• Five years experience in accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general ledger with an understanding of departmental or fund accounting.
• Five years experience with all phases of computer accounting.
• Experience in financial management accounting.
• Experience in a not-for-profit setting preferred.
• Experience in grant-making process preferred.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
• Able to effectively interact with a diverse community population.
• Strong knowledge of non-profit accounting principles, financial reporting, and compliance regulations.
• Possession of high degree of organizational skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks
• Possession of good verbal and written communication skills
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision; self-motivated
• Able to maintain poise and exercise diplomacy in dealing with the public and members of the Foundation’s support groups
• Basic word processing/computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Office)
• Able to set goals and to work toward meeting those goals in an organized manner
• Ability to effectively read, write, speak, and communicate in English
• Possession of problem-solving, decision-making skills
• Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality in all work assigned
• Ability to present a professional appearance both in dress and demeanor
